Canvas encoding applies lossy compression at the selected quality. Lower quality usually reduces size further but can introduce visible artifacts.
A high-resolution photo can often be exported at 75 to 85 percent quality for a smaller web copy with a similar visual appearance.
Results depend on image detail and the browser encoder. An already optimized source can occasionally produce an output that is not smaller.
