Power Factor Calculator

Calculate power factor and an idealized reactive-power magnitude from kW and kVA.

About the Power Factor Calculator

This calculator compares real power in kW with apparent power in kVA for a simplified power triangle.

How to use it

  1. Enter real power in kW.
  2. Enter apparent power in kVA.
  3. Calculate power factor and reactive-power magnitude.

How it works

Power factor equals kW ÷ kVA. Reactive power magnitude is calculated as √(kVA² − kW²) and reported in kVAR.

Example

For 80 kW and 100 kVA, power factor is 0.8 and the idealized reactive-power magnitude is 60 kVAR.

Notes

This calculation does not identify leading or lagging behavior, harmonics or correction requirements and is not an equipment-design tool.
