Fiber Optic Loss Calculator

Estimate stated fiber, connector and splice losses across an optical path.

About the Fiber Optic Loss Calculator

This estimator creates a simple optical loss budget from length-based attenuation and stated connection losses.

How to use it

  1. Enter fiber length and attenuation per kilometer.
  2. Enter connector and optional splice counts with their stated loss values.
  3. Calculate each contribution and the estimated total.

How it works

Total loss equals length in km times dB/km, plus connector count times connector loss, plus splice count times splice loss.

Example

Ten kilometers at 0.2 dB/km, two 0.5 dB connectors and one 0.1 dB splice total 3.1 dB.

Notes

Use specifications appropriate to the wavelength, fiber, components and conditions being evaluated; this is not a certification measurement.
