True Airspeed Calculator

Apply a basic altitude and optional temperature adjustment to indicated airspeed.

About the True Airspeed Calculator

This page demonstrates a coarse relationship between indicated speed, altitude and optional temperature.

How to use it

  1. Enter indicated airspeed in knots.
  2. Enter altitude in feet and optional outside temperature.
  3. Calculate the educational TAS estimate.

Approximation

The base factor increases indicated speed by about 2% per 1,000 ft, with an optional square-root temperature adjustment against estimated ISA temperature.

Example

120 knots at 10,000 ft produces a base estimate near 144 knots before an optional temperature adjustment.
