Kinetic Energy Calculator

Calculate idealized translational kinetic energy from mass and velocity.

About the Kinetic Energy Calculator

This calculator estimates translational kinetic energy for a mass moving at a stated speed.

How to use it

  1. Enter mass and select its unit.
  2. Enter velocity and select m/s, km/h or mph.
  3. Calculate to view energy in J, kJ and Wh.

Formula and logic

Kinetic energy uses KE = ½ × m × v² after converting mass to kilograms and velocity to meters per second.

Example

A 2 kg object moving at 3 m/s has an idealized kinetic energy of 9 J.

Notes

The estimate covers translational motion only and excludes rotation, deformation, fluid effects and energy losses.
