Stair Calculator

Estimate basic stair dimensions from total rise and a desired riser height.

About the Stair Calculator

This estimator divides a total rise into an approximate whole number of equal risers and optionally estimates horizontal run.

How to use it

  1. Enter total rise and desired riser height using one unit.
  2. Optionally enter tread depth in the same unit.
  3. Calculate the rounded riser count and derived dimensions.

Estimation formula

Risers equal total rise ÷ desired height rounded upward. Actual riser height divides total rise evenly, and estimated treads equal risers minus one.

Example

A 280 cm rise with a desired 17.5 cm riser gives 16 risers at 17.5 cm and an estimated 15 treads.
