Network Latency Calculator

Estimate the theoretical propagation delay created by distance and signal speed.

About the Network Latency Calculator

This calculator isolates the minimum propagation delay caused by physical distance.

How to use it

  1. Enter the one-way distance.
  2. Choose a medium and adjust the signal-speed factor when appropriate.
  3. Calculate ideal one-way and round-trip delay.

How it works

One-way delay is distance divided by signal speed. Round-trip delay doubles that value.

Example

A 1,000 km path at 67% of light speed has roughly 4.98 ms of ideal one-way propagation delay.

Notes

Routing, serialization, queues, processing and indirect cable paths add latency that this simple propagation estimate does not include.
