Pneumatic Cylinder Force Calculator

Estimate ideal piston force from stated bore, pressure and efficiency.

About the Pneumatic Cylinder Force Calculator

This estimator applies pressure to a circular piston area and then applies a stated efficiency factor.

How to use it

  1. Enter bore diameter and choose mm or inches.
  2. Enter positive air pressure and its unit.
  3. Enter efficiency and calculate force in newtons and pound-force.

Formula

Area equals pi times diameter squared divided by four. Theoretical force equals pressure times area; estimated force applies the efficiency percentage.

Example

A 50 mm bore at 6 bar produces about 1,178 N theoretical force and about 1,060 N at 90% efficiency.

Notes

This idealized estimate excludes rod area, friction variation, dynamic loads and safety factors and must not be used for safety-critical actuator sizing.
