Wave Energy Calculator

Estimate deep-water wave power per meter of wave crest using a simplified approximation.

About the Wave Energy Calculator

Use a standard simplified deep-water expression as an educational power indicator.

How to use it

  1. Enter significant wave height and period.
  2. Review or adjust seawater density.
  3. Calculate power per meter of crest.

Approximation

Power per crest width is density times gravity squared times wave height squared times period, divided by 64 pi.

Example

A 2 m wave height and 8-second period at 1,025 kg/m³ gives an indicator near 15.7 kW/m.

Notes

Real spectra, direction, depth, losses and device performance require coastal or offshore engineering analysis.
